General Santos City, South Cotabato

The City of General Santos is the southernmost city in the Philippines.  It is part of the SOCCSKSARGEN Region.  Famously known as the "Tuna Capital of the Philippines" but Manny Pacquiao made Gen San more famous not only in the Philippines but worldwide.

Aside from tuna, Manny Pacquiao and Gerald Anderson, the city has also other things to be proud of.  Your trip to Gen. San wouldn't be complete  if you haven't been to Kalaja Karst. The Kalaja Karst Area is about 15 kilometers off the northeast of Brgy. Conel. It is a sprawling natural reserve with abundant waterfalls and caves to be explored in the area. Only half an hour away from Kalaja Karst is the Nopol Hills, Gen. San's highest camping ground.  It is where you can enjoy the view of the sun setting down.

People from Gen San are mostly Roman Catholics, the rest are Protestants and Muslims.  The city celebrates Kalilangan Festival every February and Tuna Festival every September.

I've been here in 2006 for a work-related travel for two weeks for the Gen.San-Tacurong Transmission Line Project.  Two weeks was more than enough for me to know more about the city and the whole province as well.  The best about South Cotabato are their sweetest pineapples known as MG3.  DOLE, a world leader in fresh and packaged fruits and vegetable production, has chosen the fertile lands of Polomolok, South Cotabato to farm their sweetest pineapples.

I was also able to reach the summer capital of the Southern Philippines, Lake Sebu.  It is where the seven magnificent falls are located.  It is an hour and a half drive from Gen. Santos City or 45 minutes from Koronadal City.  Hospitality in the whole South Cotabato is truly amazing that I consider myself a native of the province in my two weeks stay.

The province is also known for it's kilawin delicacies which I did'nt even taste, sarap na sarap sila, but thinking it is still raw, I'm so sorry but I can never eat that, haha =)

We made a booking to Davao and my husband wants to see Gen Santos City as I am always telling him how beautiful the city is.  Though it is just a 4-day trip, I still include Gen.San in our very short vacation.

From Davao City make your way in going to Ecoland Bus Terminal, travel time 3 hours, bus fare Php240.  We stopped at Robinsons Gen San and had our lunch.

Since we love the beach so much, we really looked for a beach resort in Gen. San.  From Lagao, Gen San, we flagged a trike in going to jeep terminal bound to Brgy. Bauing... It is much more comfortable to ride a jeepney than to go to Brgy Bauing by a trike. Jeepney/trike fare from the terminal Php30/person.  We stayed at London Beach Resort... Rooms ranges from Php1,500 to Php1,800.  Visit their facebook page here.

  1. Glad you all had fun there, I'm kinda envious haha
Anyways, you guys stayed in a hotel right? Hmm if you want a better staycation experience, I suggest looking for a short term rental. It's a much better option since it's like a home away from home.

If you're interested, go check out eGetinnz.com, it's a booking site.
